Location & Size

Santa Clara County is in the San Francisco Bay area. To the north is San Mateo and Alameda Counties, to the east is Stanislaus County. On the
west are both Santa Cruz County and San Mateo County and to the south is San Benito County.

Size: 1,312 square miles
Santa Clara County is the largest county in the bay area. Much of the land area in the county is unincorporated ranch and forest land.

Geography

The Santa Clara Valley runs from the north to the south of the county and is ringed by the rolling hills. On the east is the Diablo Range and on the
west are the Santa Cruz Mountains. In the northwestern portion are Salt marshes and wetlands at the end of the San Francisco Bay.

Weather & Climate

The county has a Mediterranean type of climate which means it is similar to the area of Spain and Italy. It is usually warm and dry with variations
depending on where in the county you are located.

History

The Native Americans of the area were the Ohlone Indians. The first explorer was from Spain, Gaspar de Portola in 1769. The first mission and
pueblo were created in 1777. The Spanish ruled at this time. After the Mexican Revolution in 1821, Spain was out and Mexico was in. Santa Clara
County was made one of the original 28 counties in the new State of California in 1850. One of the early mottos for the county was "Valley of
Heart's Delight." This was probably due to the agriculture and food processing which was abundant in the area.
